Alicia Smith Career
Smith a four-time Emmy winner and the current Morning Anchor on 7 Action News This Morning from 4:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. on WXYZ and 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on TV 20 Detroit. She’s been an anchor and reporter since 1995, a year after starting out as a “one-man-band” journalist, filming and editing all of her own stories. In January 2007, Alicia joins Channel 7’s top-rated morning crew.
She also received Best On-Air Talent Emmys from the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2010 and 2019. Smith marched through the streets of Wayne County late at night in March 2007 in search of a program that helped victims of human trafficking. Her trailblazing special report earned her an Emmy Award for social reporting.
She was an anchor/reporter at WWMT in Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids, where she developed and transmitted 11 stories from Ground Zero in New York City in four days for WWMT’s award-winning 9/11 memorial show in 2002.

Alicia enrolled and later earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. While there she, served as a George Foster Peabody Awards Student Judge. She studied News Broadcast and Political Science and as well took part in Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and a variety of school activities and philanthropies.
