Kelly back in 1993 set up his independent company Kellyvision. It trains clients for TV and radio roles, as well in presentation skills and develops media packages for corporate clients. “The idea was to give people who were involved in the media, suitable radio and television media training,” he said. “I wasn’t teaching people how to be journalists, I was just coaching them on how to cope with the media.”

Kelly was born to Maureen and Billy as the youngest of five children. His father passed away in 1985, was the Deputy Lord Mayor of Larne when he was an Alliance councilor.

Kelly got diagnosed with throat cancer back in April 2008. He got 20 sessions of radiotherapy from Belfast City Hospital to rid him of the malignant tumor. Halfway through his month-long stint of radiotherapy, Ronan was hospitalized twice due to breathing difficulties.

It started back in February 2008 when Ronan became hoarse and he put his loss of voice down to a cold. He then sought for medical advice a couple of weeks later when his weakened voice forced him to cancel work appointments. He got back to his GP resulted in a referral to a top ear, nose, and throat consultant for further investigations, and got a frequent diagnosis with a squamous cell carcinoma, or cancerous tumor, on his right vocal cord.

Together with his wife Donna Traynor shared their story with Belfast Telegraph to raise awareness about throat cancer and carry out cancer checks.
