Benavidez began his boxing at the age of three. He took part in 15 amateur fights and won all the games he played. He then later temporarily stopped boxing and took up an eating hobby.He earned 80 pounds and weighed about 260 pounds by 12.

He thereafter resumed his boxing and controlled his eating habit. He has dropped about 100 pounds and weighs 170 pounds. Back in 2013, he made his professional debut when he was 17. He had his first fight in Mexico that saw him defeated by Erasmo Moreno by a knockout in the first round. He later won his first belt after winning the NABF Junior light heavyweight title in a fight against Rollin Williams in April 2015 in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
