Martin Seemungal Career

Simungal established his ABC headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya in 2003 after he joined the network in 2000. He covered the Ebola epidemic in Uganda, the floods in Mozambique, the famine in Malawi, and the terrorist attacks in Mombasa against Israeli visitors. From 1991 to 2006, Simungal worked as an Africa correspondent for CBC News (Canada) and ABC News (USA). During this time he lived in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Nairobi. He has reported from Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, India, Afghanistan, Yemen, Israel and Kuwait. In 2003, he won Columbia University’s DuPont Award for his coverage of the Rwandan exodus and was nominated for the Gemini Award for Best Television Reporting.

He won his two Emmy Awards. One was his 2002 He series on Congo on ABC Nightline and the other was his 2004 ABC World News coverage of the Darfur crisis on his Tonight. He has also been nominated for two Emmy Awards, one for his coverage of the 2002 Congo volcano eruption on World News Tonight. He joined CTV News as his Middle East correspondent in January 2011. On January 23, 2011, he submitted his first report in this capacity. Seamingal worked for the Ottawa Broadcasting Station from 1984 to 1988, when he returned to CTV. Simingal joined PBS in 2014 as a special correspondent for PBS NewsHour.
