Williams was born to Doris May Moore, who is of English, Scottish and German ancestry, and Canadian-born Frank Miller Brenhorn. Barry and his brothers Craig and Scott Brenkhorn grew up in Pacific Palisades, California alongside actor Peter Graves. As a child, Williams decided to become an actor and made his television debut in the 1967 “Christmas” episode of Dragnet 1967.

After The Brady Bunch was canceled in 1974, Williams continued to make guest appearances on television. He has also worked in musical theater and has toured with shows such as Grease, The Sound of Music, Pippin and West Side Story.
Williams made her Broadway debut in the musical Romance/Romance, starring Alison Fraser, and was nominated for a Tony Award. When Scott Bakula left the production, Williams took over as the male lead in Alfred/Sam. Years later, Williams was able to capitalize on the Greg Brady stereotype. He landed a role that represented a departure from the Brady image, appearing in television and film during his teenage years and cementing his famous role. In 1984, he was cast as Hannibal, an English con man who co-starred with Holly Sutton Scorpio (Emma Sams) in the acclaimed TV show General Hospital.
Williams has made numerous appearances in Brady’s Bunch of TV shows, most recently he appeared in the 1988 Christmas film A Very Brady Christmas, and Greg was credited for his performance as Brady in 1989. He received the Artist Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

I Was A Teenage Greg, co-authored with Chris Kreski, became a New York Times bestseller. Adapted in the 2000 TV movie Growing Up Brady, starring Adam Brody as Williams. Williams sang “The Real Greg Brady”, a parody of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady” in 2000. Comedian and radio producer Williams collaborated with Z100 NY WHTZ’s David Brody and WEBN Radio’s Jay Gilbert on the song in Cincinnati.
Williams briefly appeared as an audience member in the music video for Peter Gabriel’s 2002 song “The Barry Williams Show”. The actor is not the subject of the song, but a fictional talk show host who resembles Jerry Springer. Gabriel later revealed that he didn’t know the Brady Bunch star when he was writing the song.
Williams performed several times as a paid lead dancer at New York’s Buffalo, the world’s largest discotheque.
