He started his career as a featherweight boxer. However, he was drafted into the U.S. Army after 17 bouts in 1951. Afterward, he worked a series of odd jobs out of the military and started writing songs in his spare time.
During this time, Berry opened his own record store in Detroit since had modest success as a songwriter. Unfortunately, he soon went bankrupt and began his own record label on borrowed funds in 1959.
He ventured into movies that starred Diana Ross: Lady Sings the Blues and Mahogany. Later, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame afterward released an autobiography To Be Loved.
Citing his record label Motown, Berry developed the majority of the great rhythm-and-blues (R&B) performers. Moreover, he was said to have masterminded the popular “Motown sound,” a ballad-based blend of traditional black harmony and gospel music with the lively beat of R&B.
