Janell Ross Biography

Born in the USA, Janell Ross is a TIME news reporter who writes about race, politics and social issues. She graduated from Vassar College in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She went on to attend Columbia University, where she earned a master’s degree in journalism.

She is a senior correspondent for TIME and a contributor for MSNBC in New York, New York, United States. She writes and reports on platforms about race and identity, and she contributes to TIME 100 Talks.

She began her career as a journalist in 2002 with the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. In 2004, she joined the News & Observer’s city government team as a reporter. She worked as a reporter for The Tennessean from 2006 to 2010, covering immigration, race and other social issues.

Ross joined The Huffington Post in 2011 as a senior correspondent covering economic issues and race. She worked as a correspondent for The Washington Post from 2015 to 2018.

Ross was a New America National Fellow from 2016 to 2017. She spent her fellowship year writing a book about the racial wealth gap and the truths about its true origins revealed by the Great Recession. Beacon Press will publish the book.
