Previously, he served as leader of the Democratic Rally from 1997 to 2013 and as Mayor of Limassol from 1981 to 2013. Nichols was first elected in the 2013 presidential election and re-elected in 2018. As president, he oversaw economic recovery due to improved quality of life on the island, largely due to increased foreign investment.

However, Anastasiadis cut off public use. Between 2015 and 2017, he advanced the reunification process to its furthest stage in over a decade, but ultimately an agreement could not be reached.
