Xiomara Castro Career
Castro grew up in Tegucigalpa and studied business administration. She married Manuel Zelaya in 1976 and worked in the women’s wing of the Honduran Liberal Party. Chiomara became the country’s First Lady in 2006, after her husband won the presidential election in Honduras in 2005. Castro joined the National Popular Resistance Front after the 2009 coup in Honduras that ended her husband’s leadership.
He was nominated as the presidential candidate of the left-wing Liberal and Reconstructionist Party (LIBRE) in the 2013 Honduran elections, finishing second behind Juan Orlando Hernández, the candidate of the Honduran Nationalist Party, and came first in the election. . He defeated liberal candidate Mauricio Villeda. He was Salvador Nasralla’s running mate in the 2017 Honduran elections, but narrowly lost to Hernández due to allegations of irregularities.
Castro was finally elected president in the 2021 Honduran elections, defeating the country’s candidate Nasry Asfura and his running mate Nasralla. He is the first president from outside the country’s two-party system since the administration was reestablished in 1982.
