Ilham Aliyev Biography
Ilham Aliyev is an Azerbaijani politician who has been the fourth president of Azerbaijan since October 31, 2003. He is the former Prime Minister of Azerbaijan.
His family benefited from their ties to state-owned enterprises. They own significant shares of many major banks in Azerbaijan, construction companies, telecommunications companies, and part of the country’s oil and gas industry. Much of the wealth is hidden in a complex network of offshore companies.
In 2012, he was named “Person of the Year” in corruption by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project. In 2017, it was revealed that Aliyev and his family were involved in the Azerbaijan Laundry, a complex financial scheme designed to bribe European elites to suppress criticism of Aliyev and promote his good governance.
Many observers see Aliyev as a dictator. He ran the administration in Azerbaijan; elections are not free and fair, political power is in the hands of Aliyev and his extended family, corruption is widespread, and threats of human rights violations continue (such as torture, detention, harassment of journalists and NGOs).
