In the 2012 election, Stabenow was unopposed in the Democratic primary and defeated Republican nominee Pete Hoekstra, a former U.S. representative. She won 59% to Hoekstra’s 38%.

In the nb b2018 United States Senate election in Michigan, Stabenow was re-elected to a fourth term, defeating Republican nominee John E. James. She defeated John James by a margin of 52.3%-45.8%. She was re-elected by 275,660 votes (a 6.50% margin), making this the closest U.S. Senate election in Michigan since 2000.
