Merritt’s first big case was of Mark Hughes, who was unlawfully identified by police as the man who gunned down five police officers in downtown Dallas during a 2016 march against police brutality. He as well represented Jacqueline Craig after a Fort Worth police officer tackled and arrested her when she called 911 about a neighbor grabbing her young son by the neck.

He is as well the lawyer of the family of Jordan Edwards, the 15-year-old fatally shot by former Balch Springs officer Roy Oliver. Oliver was convicted of murder last month and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

He accused a Texas state trooper of handcuffing and raping a woman before taking her to jail to be booked on a driving while intoxicated charge. The claims sparked national outrage.

Turns out the woman faked the whole story. A dash-cam video ultimately proved that the officer hadn’t done anything wrong. Merritt apologized then for bringing the false claims to national prominence.

Lee Merritt Ahmaud Arbery

Merritt represented the family of Ahmaud Arbery who was shot to death while jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick, Georgia, after being pursued by two white men in a pickup truck. Ahmaud was 25 years old by the time of his death on February 23, 2020.

In May 2020, he said that the US Department of Justice is investigating the shooting death as a hate crime. Merritt said he learned about the development after meeting with United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia Bobby Christine. A spokesman for Christine’s office declined to comment.

On June 2020, Jay-Z sent a jet to fly Ahmaud Arbery’s lawyers to Georgia hearing for his accused killers Merritt of Philadelphia’s Merritt Law Firm credited the music superstar and activist with helping them get to Brunswick, Georgia, for a probable-cause hearing for the three men charged in Arbery’s death.

Merrit earned a Cum Laude from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He later joined law school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Temple University’s James Beasley School of Law.

Merritt was born to Gregory Merritt, was a gang member in the Rollin 60s Crips. Nicknamed Murder Roc, his father was in and out of prison throughout his son’s life. Merritt’s mother collected welfare checks and worked various jobs.

His mother worked at a J.C. Penney, a coin-operated laundry and a hospice, before later landing a job as a nurse. He was named Stacy after her but identifies by his middle name, Lee. He learned of racial injustice through the beating of Rodney King and the L.A. race riots.

His family moved to a small town in Florida, and he was kicked out of school three times. He later graduated from high school and was the first in his family to do so.
