Andrea Jenkins an American policy aide, politician, writer, performance artist, poet, and transgender activist well known for being the first black openly transgender woman elected to public office in the United States. He as well held the position since January 2018 on the Minneapolis City Council.

In May 2020, Jenkins gave an emotional rendition at a press conference for George Floyd, an African-American man who died at the hands of one of the city’s white police officers. Jenkins said she hoped the song offered “amazing grace” to Floyd’s surviving family members and pledged to fight injustice as an elected official.

Jenkins worked for quite some time as a vocational counselor with Hennepin County. In 2001, Robert Lilligren, who was running for a seat on the Minneapolis City Council, urged Jenkins to be a part of his campaign. After his election, Jenkins followed Lilligren’s staff where she was an aide for four years.

In 2005, Elizabeth Glidden was later elected to the City Council and appointed Jenkins as an aide. Jenkins earned a fellowship devoted to transgender issues. In 2014, she assisted in establishing the Transgender Issues Work Group. The same year, she organized a City Council summit on transgender equity intended to highlight the issues trans people in Minnesota face.

In 2010, Jenkins was awarded the Naked Stages grant from the Jerome Foundation and Pillsbury House Theater. She founded “Body Parts: Reflections on Reflections.”December 2016 Jenkins declared that she would run to represent Minneapolis’s 8th Ward on the City Council.

Glidden, who held the position, proclaimed that she would not run for reelection. Her campaign slogan was “Leadership. Access. Equity.” On November 7, 2017, Jenkins was the winner of the election with more than 70% of the vote. The Minneapolis City Council has only had six other Black members.

At the time of the 2017 election, three Black council members won their races. Jenkins was elected Vice President of City Council shortly after her election. She also serves as chair of the new Race Equity Subcommittee. Jenkins also assisted in creating a Racial Equity Community Advisory Committee consisting of city residents.
