Lisa started her professional career working for WBTW in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She worked for WBTW between 1998 to 1999 after she was dismissed for unknown reasons. Lisa then joined The Sun News as a freelancer and at the same time freelancing for Reuters News Agency. She later left The Sun News and joined WIS, an NBC affiliate as a political reporter and still reporting for Reuters.
She covered the South Carolina Legislature, the debate on the display of the Confederate Flag at the South Carolina State House, and the 2000 Republican presidential primaries. In 2003, Desjardins became a newswoman at the Washington, D.C. bureau of the Associated Press, where she reported on, among other things, the 2004 presidential election; Medicaid; hurricanes; and the Iraq War.

Lisa joined CNN in the year 2005 where she worked for the CNN Radio Congress and CNN.com and CNN News. CNN Radio was shut down in June 2013 and she transferred to CNN Washington where she worked as the Capitol Hill correspondent.
One of her most memorable coverages includes the book on personal finance with Rick Emerson known as Zombie Economics. The book was published in May 2011 by Avery Publishers. She left CNN in 2014 after being fired to join her current job at PBS NewsHour.
