Harris is an American Musician and Songwriter who acquired one of the most unique voices in country, Pop, Rock, and Folk Music. Her expressive and distinctive songs have won her a place in American Pop history .

Harris started her musical career performing folk songs in Greenwich Village coffee houses and clubs. After being established and noticed as a promising new singer, she had a first major breakthrough when contributing her velvety, country-infused soprano vocals to Gram Parsons’s two solo albums between 1973 and 1974. When Parsons died in 1973, Harris released her major-label debut album, Pieces of the Sky (1975), which garnered highly positive reviews and included her tribute to Parsons, “From Boulder to Birmingham”.

Harris met and married songwriter Tom Slocum in 1969 , while performing in Greenwich Village. She recorded her first album, Gliding Bird in 1970. Harris and Slocum’s seperated soon she found out she was pregnant for Slocum, subsequently her record label folded up because of the demand for marriage. She returned back to her parent’s farm outside Washington, DC, to nurse her newborn daughter which she named Haille.

In 1977, Harris remarried her producer Brian Ahern at his home in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The two were blessed with a daughter, Megan and later divorced in 1984. She soon found love again a singer and a songwriter , Paul Kennerly and tied a knot in 1985; again later divorced in 1993.

Harris grew up in North Carolina and Virginia as the valedictorian of her high school class. She went on to college at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro after getting a theater scholarship but subsequently shifted her focus to music. She dropped out of school early to pursue a music career full-time in New York.
