Back in 2013, Bettes got involved in a tornado accident and was one of the storm chasers who were struck by an EF3 tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma. The tornado rolled and tossed his SUV estimated 200 yards (180 m) into a field, collapsing the roof.

It inflicted injuries to his crew with broken several bones of the driver Austin Anderson. The same tornado saw TWISTEX storm chasers Tim Samaras, his son Paul, and colleague Carl Young of South Lake Tahoe perished.

He laong and his team got back to the Great Plains to forecast and report severe weather after having healsed as part of the 2014 Tornado Track.
