He ran for president of South Ossetia in 2017, but lost to Anatoly Bibilov. After losing the election, he announced in September 2017 that he had founded his own political party, the Albanian Union.

However, in May 2018, the Ministry of Justice of South Ossetia refused to register the party. In January 2019, the Albanian Union joined New Ossetia and joined the Nihaz party. Gagloev was elected President of Nykhaz in February 2020.

Gagloev is running for a second term in the 2022 elections. On April 10, 2022, he won the primary election with 36.9% of the votes against the current president Anatoly Bibilov. . Before the match, Gagloev received support from three competitors eliminated in the first round; Alexander Pliyev, Garry Muldarov and Dmitry Tasoev reached the final against Bibilov.
