Alar Karis Career

In August 2021, Riigikogu President Jüri Ratas contacted Alar with a proposal to be elected president of Estonia in the next autumn elections. He accepted the candidacy and his candidacy was later approved by the United Reform Party[9] and the Center Party. Karis was elected President of Estonia on 31 August 2021 with a two-thirds majority (72 votes) in the Parliament. It will enter into force on October 11, 2021.

The election was met with criticism for the lack of opposition candidates and calls to change the election. In his acceptance speech, Callis addressed the “controversies surrounding the presidential election process” and called on Congress to reform the process, such as using the Electoral College to increase that dissemination, help elect candidates, and even get votes directly. He promised that he would be an equal and moderate person during his presidency.
