He was first elected citywide to the Atlanta City Council Post 3 at-Large back in November 2013 and got was re-elected back in 2017. On Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, he got elected mayor of Atlanta.

Dickens serves as the Chief Development Officer for TechBridge, a nonprofit that drives the community with the aim of bringing affordable technology and business expertise to other nonprofit organizations. Back in 2018, he co-founded the Technology Career Program, a well-known free program that is set to prepare unemployed and individuals with disadvantages in the work field for a career in the growing technology job market. The program as well teaches high-demand technology knowledge and as well helping participants land jobs in IT departments across Atlanta.
He previously worked as the Assistant Director of Outreach Initiatives for Georgia Tech’s Office of Institute Diversity.
