Ashraf Ghani’s Career

For most of the 1990s, Ashraf worked at the World Bank. He returned to Afghanistan after the overthrow of the Taliban government in December 2001. He later served as finance minister in Hamid Karzai’s cabinet. He resigned in December 2004 and became the head of Kabul University. In 2009, Ghani participated in the 2009 Afghanistan presidential election but finished fourth.

In 2014, Ghani became president after winning the controversial 2014 Afghanistan presidential election. The election was highly competitive, and talks between Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah were led by the United States. Power was split 50-50, with Ghani becoming president and Abdullah as leader.

On February 18, 2020, Ghani was re-elected following a delay in the 2019 presidential election results. He was sworn in on March 9, 2020.
