Brian Houston is an Australian pastor and evangelist, as well as the founder and senior pastor of Hillsong Church in Sydney. He served as President of the Church of Christ of Australia, the Australian branch of the Church of God, from 1997 to 2009.

Houston was born and raised in New Zealand as the son of Frank and Hazel Houston, both lifeguards. At the age of three, he left the family Police Department and became a member of parliament.

Houston’s family joined the New Zealand Assembly of God when she was three years old and began pastoring at a church in Lower Hutt, near Wellington. Brian, his brother and three sisters spent their childhood there. Brian studied at Bible College for three years after completing his education.

After moving to Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1978, she worked for her father, Frank, at the Sydney Center for Christian Living in Darlinghurst, Houston. He founded a church on the Central Coast in 1980 and a church in 1981. He worked at a church in Liverpool.

Houston leased the Baulkham Hills Public School auditorium in northwest Sydney in 1983 to build a new church, the Hills Christian Living Centre. The meeting took place on August 14, 1983.

Following Andrew Evans’ retirement in May 1997, Houston was elected President of the Australian Assembly of God (now known as the Australian Church of Christ).
In February 2000, Houston was instrumental in establishing the Australian Christian Church Network of Pentecostal churches. He is the organization’s first president, representing approximately 200,000 members of the participating churches.

Bryan is also a member of the Australian Pentecostal Pastors Association (APMF). Wayne Alcorn was chosen to replace Houston during the 2009 National Church of Christ Conference in Australia.

Houston is a Producer for Hillsong Music Australia (HMA), Hillsong Church Music Ministries. Hillsong Live, the “worship program” featuring a full worship team from Hillsong United (produced by Youth Ministries) and Hillsong Church, held the record for the first six years.

Hillsong broadcasts live music every year with songs from congregations around the world. “Mighty to Save” and “Shout to the Lord” are two Hillsong songs; the last one featured in the 2008 American Idol special “Idol Gives Back”.

In addition, Hillsong split from the Church of Christ of Australia in September 2018 to become an independent group and define itself as an international and charismatic church. Hillsong and the ACC said the split was amicable.
