Dame Sandra Prunella Mason is a Barbadian politician, lawyer and diplomat who has served as the first president of Barbados since 2021. She is the eighth and final president of Barbados, from 2018 to 2021, and the second woman to hold the post.

Sandra was elected the country’s first president by the Parliament of Barbados on October 20, 2021, and served in office until November 30, 2021, when Barbados ceased to practice a constitutional monarchy and became a nation.

Dame Sandra Mason’s career

Sandra was elected president of the country by the Parliament of Barbados on 20 October 2021 and took office on 30 November 2021, before Barbados had achieved an independent democracy.

She is a lawyer, has served as a judge in the Supreme Court of Saint Lucia and the Barbados Court of Appeal, and is the first woman summoned to the courts in Barbados.

She chaired the Caribbean Community Regional Integration Review Commission, was the first judge to appoint a representative to Barbados, and the first woman to serve on the country’s Supreme Court.

Mason was the first person from Barbados to be elected to the House of Commons. In 2017, she was elected the eighth president of Barbados and her term began on 8 January 2018.
Mason, at the same time as his appointment, was appointed to St. Michael and St. George. After his term as Prime Minister, he received the National Hero Order, the Barbados Order and the Medal of Freedom.
