Daniel Ortega Career
During his first term, he implemented policies that led to left-wing reforms throughout Nicaragua. In the following years, Ortega’s left-wing radical politics cooled, leading him to seek pro-business policies and even compromise with the Catholic Church. As part of this, his administration introduced anti-abortion laws, and although he had previously claimed to be an atheist, his comments gave rise to a confident new voice.
Ortega rose to prominence after his resignation during the 1979 Nicaraguan revolution and his exile from the United States by president Anastasio Somoza Debayle. Throughout the 1980s, his government faced attack from American rebels known as the Contras.
After a presidency marked by conflict and economic collapse, Ortega lost to Violetta Chamorro in the 1990 Nicaraguan elections marred by US intervention.
Ortega failed to run for president in 1996 and 2001, but won the 2006 Nicaraguan elections. While in office he associated himself with Latin American socialists.
