Carly began his broadcasting career as his director of news for his KCPR-FM in San Luis his Obispo. From 1978 to his 1981, he worked as an 11pm worker at his KCOY near Santa Maria. Anchor and 6pm sports presenter (you can see him in his then-glitch video on YouTube).

He then moved to KTVB in Boise, Idaho where he spent three years and then relocated to Seattle where he spent 15 years. He started his career at KIRO-TV in 1983, then moved to competitor KING-TV in 1986, where he spent almost six years before returning to KIRO in 1998. Carly joined WBBM-TV in November 1998 in Chicago. He took over management of the news channel in early 2001 and served as the anchor at 5pm. And the news program at 10:00 pm.

Carly joined ABC News in February 2004 as an evening presenter and reporter for World News Now, World News This Morning, and ABC News Now. “I think ABC is the leading broadcast journalism company in the country, probably the world,” he told friends, according to a February 11, 2004 article in the Chicago Sun-Times. “Exciting adventures await you.”

Since joining ABC News, Curley has flown to Baghdad to cover Hurricane Katrina and the 2005 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference. Curley said he joined ABC News in 2004 as a general reporter. On July 25, 2017, he was named senior traffic correspondent for his ABC News.
