 Donna Traynor Biography

Donna Traynor an Irish journalist and broadcaster known as the former anchor of BBC Newsline. She resigned from her work at BBC Northern Ireland back on 15 November 2021. She as well also hosted Children in Need, at the Balmoral Show, Country Times and education programmes. She was also nominated twice by the Royal Television Society awards for the Best Regional TV Presenter category.

Traynor started off her broadcasting career working with RTE in Dublin and later joined to BBC I in 1989 and presented radio news bulletins before joining television. Back on 31 August 1994, when the IRA announced its ceasefire, it was Donna, reporting for Radio Ulster, who broke the news to listeners.

 She was seen presenting the IRA Decommissioning programme and the BBC Newsline special on Devolution Day. They both picked up an Irish Film and Television Award for Best News Programme.

Come 15th of November 2021 she announced her resignation from the corporation with immediate effect. She said “It is with deep sadness that, after almost 33 years, I am leaving the job that I love and resigning from BBC Northern Ireland with immediate effect. “Because this is the subject of ongoing Employment Tribunal and other legal proceedings, I am not able to respond to any questions or comments about my reasons for leaving the organisation.”

A BBC Northern Ireland spokesman as well shared that: “We do not comment on individual staff matters.”

Traynor is in good health but her husband who has battled throat cancer previously. Back in July 2008 her husband Ronan Kelly shared that “he has been fighting throat cancer for two months.” The biopsy results showed her husband had a tumour on his right vocal chord. However, it was in its early stages and was treatable. Her partner “in sickness and in health,” as she said at the time, Donna has actively involved in nursing Ronan back to good health.
