Erwin Lutzer an ( Erwin W. Lutzer) an evangelical Christian pastor, teacher, and author. Lutzer was the senior pastor of The Moody Church in Chicago, Illinois, from 1980 to 2016.

Lutzer became the senior pastor of the Moody Church in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood in January 1980. The church and its ministries have grown significantly under Lutzer’s leadership, leading to the construction of a new Christian Life Center to complement the existing seventy-five-year-old building.

On January 4, 2016, at a Sunday sermon, he announced that he would be retiring from his senior pastor position at the Moody Church. Lutzer said he would retain the position until a new senior pastor was decided, and afterward would consider himself to be the church’s “Pastor Emeritus”, hoping to (assume a wider role) by continuing his radio show (Running to Win) as well as (speaking at media rallies, conducting seminars, and writing books) in the future.

On the Sunday morning of May 22, 2016, he preached his last sermon as Senior Pastor of the Moody Church as well as officially stepped down from the position.

Lutzer enrolled and later graduated from Winnipeg Bible Institute in 1962 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Education. He worked as senior pastor of Edgewater Baptist Church, Chicago, from the year1971 to 1977. During that time Lutzer completed an M.A. in Philosophy from Loyola University Chicago, previously he had earned the Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in the year 1967.

Lutzer enrolled for the Ph.D. program at Loyola to pursue a doctorate in Philosophy; however, he did not complete his dissertation. In subsequent years, he has received two honorary doctorates, an LL.D. from Simon Greenleaf School of Law as well as a Doctor of Divinity from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.

Erwin was born to Gustav Lutzer and Wanda Lutzer. His parents met when both families relocated to the same part of rural Canada. Erwin’s dad Gustav passed away at the age of 106 years old.

His father Gustav was born in 1902 to a German family living in Ukraine, and during World War I, (1914). While his mother Wanda was born to German parents in Ukraine in 1908 and died on January 1, 2012, a month after her 103rd birthday. It is not known if he has any siblings.
