Frank-Walter Steinmeier is a German politician who has been President of Germany since 19 March 2017. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2005 – 2009 and 2013 – 2017, and as Vice President of Germany between 2007 – 2009. He served as Vice President of Germany in 2016. He served as Office Director of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Steinmeier is a member of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), has a doctorate in law and is a civil servant. He was a close aide of Gerhard Schröder for many years when Schröder was Chancellor of Lower Saxony in the 1990s, and served as Schröder’s deputy in the 1996 German government.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s Career
When Schröder became Chancellor of Germany in 1998, he was appointed Vice President to oversee the intelligence services in the Chancellery. He served as Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1999 and 2005. After the 2005 federal elections, Frank served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Angela Merkel’s first coalition government, and from 2007 he also held the position of Vice-President – Chancellor.
He served as chairman of the party for a short time in 2008. He became the Prime Minister candidate of the Social Democrats in the 2009 parliamentary elections, but his party lost the election and he left the government and became the leader of the opposition.
After the 2013 presidential election, Walter returned as Minister of Foreign Affairs in Merkel’s second major government. In November 2016, it was announced that the coalition including his own party and the CDU/CSU was declared the winner as the German chancellor and the party leaders held important positions in the government.
He left the cabinet on January 27, 2017. Steinmeier was elected president of the Federal Congress on February 12, 2017, with 74% of the votes. He was re-elected for a second and final term in the Federal Congress on February 13, 2022, with 78% of the votes.
