She was born on the Nez Perce Reservation in Lapwai, Idaho and spent her first three years of her childhood there before moving to Seattle with her mother.
Kaufman enrolled at the University of Minnesota because she “was the only university in the country that offered a bachelor’s degree in Native American Studies.” She continued her education at the University of Minnesota’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication with a WCCO-TV grant for minorities in broadcasting.
Kaufman started his broadcasting career at the University of Minnesota. He then began working as a reporter and anchor for He King 5 News in Seattle, where he won four Emmy Awards. In 1987, she joined Good Morning Her America as a special correspondent and back-up her anchor.
She started her career in 1990 when she was a correspondent on CBS News and she was a backup her anchor on CBS This Morning. She spent her 20 years with CBS, 48 Hours, Street Stories, Sunday Morning, CBS Radio, CBS Special Report, The Early Show, CBS Evening News, and more. I was in charge of the report on the program. Her memoir, Falling Into Place, was published in September 2013.
