The book expands on many of the themes covered in Cafferty’s Situation Room segment and criticizes the growing culture of sensationalism and tabloid journalism in contemporary news media. It is a satirical critique of political and social issues like the long arm of big business, the Iraq War, and Hurricane Katrina.
The book includes personal passages that detail Cafferty’s upbringing, time in the military, and beginnings as a journalist. Very little of my back story is Hallmark Card material, but it could help you understand how I perceive and interpret what is happening around me, to paraphrase Cafferty. The second book by Cafferty, Now or Never: Getting Down to the Business of Saving Our American Dream, was released by Wiley on March 9.

In 1961, Cafferty started his career as the host of a kids’ program at KOLO-TV in Reno, Nevada. Before going on to the daytime talk show Cafferty & Company on WDAF-TV in Kansas City, Missouri, he later served as the station’s production manager at KCRL-TV. He started working for WHO-TV in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1974 as a nighttime co-anchor before becoming the news director.
In 1977, Cafferty started working for WNBC-TV in New York City as a weekend and evening co-anchor for the 6:00 p.m. program. In 1979, Cafferty began working on the evening broadcast at 5:00 p.m. on WNBC-TV. Sue Simmons joined him the following year. Their program was renamed Live at Five, and throughout the 1980s, audiences enjoyed its blend of news, features, and celebrity interviews.
Around Thanksgiving 1989, Cafferty left WNBC-TV due to a contract disagreement and joined the competitor WNYW, where he anchored the Fox flagship station’s 7:00 p.m. news and a brief late-night program called Newsline New York. Until she joined CNN in 1998, Cafferty worked for the then-independent station WPIX, where she co-anchored the 10:00 p.m. show.
