The outing first aired on ABC News prime time as “Looking for America.” Later, with his longtime producer and friend Robert Campos, the Bravo Network adventure continued under his Taillights name. Mr. Shadler was welcomed into Oprah Winfrey’s show in 2000, along with some of the people who took him there.
Shadler’s hitchhiker story is sometimes seen as the forerunner of the “reality TV” trend, as it pioneered the use of miniature video cameras and dash cams in cars. In 1996, “Looking for America” was nominated for an Emmy Award. Jay previously hosted the Discovery Channel series The Justice File, which analyzed real-life crimes and featured commentary from law professor Arthur Miller and reports from other ABC News projects.
