Ahler began his broadcasting career with the Michigan State Spartans and Colorado with his college men’s hockey teams, his Tigers, Salt Lake with his Golden Eagles and Louisville with his Icehawks. Ahlers was the voice of the Detroit Vipers on television and radio for five seasons. He was also named to Fox Sports Net’s IHL Game of the Week and Turner Cup Finals at the time. During his time with the Vipers, he won the IHL Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1995 and two Emmy Awards for Best Sports Broadcast in 1995 and 1998. Ahlers joined the Tampa Bay Lightning and worked as a play-by-play radio announcer until 2002. He was also the host of Lightning’s pre-game television show and Sunshine He’s Weekly, a magazine-style show that aired on the network.

During the 2002–03 NHL season, Ahlers participated in television broadcasts for the Ducks, working with long-time Ducks color commentator Brian Hayward. In 2003, he won an Emmy Award for Best Live Sports Broadcast for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Detroit Red Wings. He also worked as an announcer for Versus during NHL games. Ahlers was named the permanent host of GSN’s Poker Royale in 2005. He hosted his six tournaments in the series until the show ended in December 2005. He started working as a football announcer at the College of Sports USA in 2012.
