John Kapoor (John Nath Kapoor) an American multi-millionaire, pharmaceutical entrepreneur. He is well known foe previously working as the CEO of Insys Therapeutics, and held majority shareholder in the generic drug manufacturing company Akorn.

John Kapoor Career

Kapoor statrted off his career in 1972 working at Invenex Pharmaceutical on Grand Island, NY. He later joined LyphoMed where he took the company public and oversaw its operations through a scandal involving lax production standards that saw several patients’ deaths.

He was arrested in 2017 and charged with a number of felony counts including RICO conspiracy, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and other crimes. In June of 2019, he was was found guilty on all the charges.

On October 2017 Kapoor got arrested in Arizona and charged with RICO conspiracy, conspiracy on wirefraud, and conspiracy aganist Anti-Kickback Law. The charges indicated that he took part in bribing doctors to prescribe fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid manufactured under the brand name Subsys by his company Insys Therapeutics. The U.S. Attorney William Weinreb said his charges reflected authorities’ commitment to combat the opioid epidemic.

He as well got charged for having conspired to defraud health insurance providers. Just after his charges were announced, he resigned from the Board of Insys Therapeutics. On May 2, 2019, he got convicted for engaging in a racketeering conspiracy to increase the profits of his company’s opiate painkiller, Subsys.

Kapoor had his five-and-a-half years in prison sentence in a Boston courtroom on January 23, 2020. He was sentenced for a conspiracy to bribe doctors to prescribe his company’s potent fentanyl painkiller to patients who didn’t need it. He was senteced along with the company’s former vice president of sales, Alec Burlakoff, the company was sentenced to 26 months.

The fomer CEO Michael Babich as well got sentenced to 30 months in prison along with a former regional sales director, Sunrise Lee, is to serve a one year in prison. Previously on his trial he pleaded guilty to their roles in the scheme to bribe doctors to prescribe Insys’ fentanyl spray.

Kapoor’s 66-month prison term is substantially less than the 15-year sentence recommended by federal prosecutors, but it is more than the one year requested by his defense attorneys, who maintained the executive’s innocence and stressed his old age as the reason for a short prison sentence.

The U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs shared in detailed how she arrived at the lesser sentence after considering Kapoor’s advanced age and philanthropy, as well as “his central role in the crime,” The Associated Press reported.
