Just after high school, Wilson created a feature film called “Jingle Berry”. Back still in college, he created another film called Looner, a short documentary about a balloon fetish community. After graduating from Binghamton University, he worked for a private investigator. He went on a tour with David Bryrne to make an original film about his performance. The film was titled Temporary Color.
In 2016, he made a documentary about the Sundance Film Festival for Vimeo. His work got attention of comedian and writer Nathan Fielder. They later met in 2018 and started collaborating. His show How To With John Wilson premiered on October 23, 2020.
