Johnny Newman an American retired professional basketball player who starred at the University of Richmond, prior to going on to play in the National Basketball Association.

In his 16 seasons as of 1986–2002 in the NBA, he was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets as well as Dallas Mavericks.

He also played basketball in college with Richmond Spiders men’s basketball from 1982 to 1986 and started playing professionally in 1986. Since Harper and Newman performed the same role, during his rookie season, Newman was compelled to ride the bench. For the 1987–1988 season, Newman entered the New York Knicks and worked slowly into the starting lineup.

Newman led the Knicks into the playoffs together with teammates Mark Jackson and Patrick Ewing, averaging 19.0 ppg (including 35 points in match 3) in an opening-round loss to the Boston Celtics.

Newman continued to grow into his position in the starting five in 1988–89. He was 16.0 ppg on average and led the Knicks to the Atlantic Division title of the NBA. Newman signed with the Charlotte Hornets after the 1989–90 season as a free agent, an expansion franchise in its 3rd year of life.

Newman was traded in return for Jason Kidd by the New Jersey Nets together with Stephon Marbury after the 2000–01 NBA season. In his NBA career, Newman scored 12,740 points. In 2011, Newman was introduced to the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
