Thompson grew up in Mechanicsville and his interest in weather came from observing weather and watching storms in the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic at a young age.

He knew in elementary school that he wanted to be a meteorologist. Thompson left his hometown to pursue his dreams after high school. Carla has a BA in Atmospheric Science from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. A few months later, she landed her first job as a weekend radio and news anchor at KLST in San Angelo, Texas. She lived in Texas for over a year before returning to Virginia to work at WFXR.
