Kent Ninomiya Biography

Kent Ninomiya an Asian-American broadcast reporter to be a U.S. television station’s main news anchor. He got to be the first Asian American person to be a major anchor.

In 2003, Kent Ninomiya became KSTP-TV’s main news anchor in Minneapolis-St Paul. His co-anchor is an African American woman, Harris Faulkner. Journalism organizations across the nation have heralded the all-minority primary anchor team working on a television market with very few minority viewers as a courageous move forward. In 2006 and 2007, Ninomiya was also the main news anchor and editor-in-chief at WICD in Champaign.

Ninomiya first became a full-time news anchor in 1999 when he was named KGO-TV’s weekday 5 am-7 am morning news anchor, the ABC owned and operated San Francisco television station. Beth Spicuza, Carolyn Johnson and Elizabeth Bermudez were his co-anchors at KGO. The weekend evening news at KCOP in Los Angeles was anchored by Ninomiya from 2001 to 2003.

There he worked with several prominent co-anchors including Gina Silva, Jennifer Gould, Maria Quiban, Lauren Sánchez, among others. During the moment of Ninomiya at KCOP, as part of a duopoly, the news operation was combined with KTTV, the Los Angeles Fox station. For both Los Angeles TV stations, Ninomiya appeared on the air.

He was a reporter before working in Los Angeles and a fill-in anchor. He worked for WLS-TV from 1993 to 1998, and the ABC owned and operated a TV station in Chicago. He worked at the ABC TV station in San Diego at KGTV from 1991 to 1993. From 1990 to 1991 he worked for the Fresno television station owned and operated by the ABC for KFSN. He worked for the CBS television station in Fresno for KJEO (now KGPE) in 1990.

In 1989, when he was the weekday morning news anchor for KIEM, the NBC television station in Eureka, California, Ninomiya first appeared on-air as a television news anchor. He reported on that station as well.

Ninomiya’s first appearance on television was an assignment editor and reporter at WGGB in early 1989, the ABC television station in Springfield, Massachusetts. He previously worked in Washington, D.C. behind the scenes. CNN office in 1988, KGO-TV in 1988 in San Francisco and KTVU in 1987 in Oakland.
