Born into an ordinary family in Kolin, he joined the Czechoslovak Communist Party in 1968, but was expelled from the party two years later for opposing the Warsaw Pact occupation. He joined the Czech Social Democratic Party after the 1989 Velvet Revolution and led the party in the 1996 elections.
Milos became president following a disagreement with his long-time rival Vaclav Klaus following the 1998 elections. His government continued the privatization of the Czech public sector and created new regions. Zeman was the last minister to vote and actually give the green light to bomb Yugoslavia in 1999. He ran for president in 2003, but was dismissed after members of his party did not vote for him.
He was elected President of the Czech Republic in January 2013 and has been the leader of the republic for most of his time. He was the first direct president in Czech history; Its two leaders, Vaclav Havel and Vaclav Klaus, were elected by the Czech Parliament. In 2018, Milos was re-elected. During his tenure, Radio Free Europe described him as “one of the Kremlin’s friendliest leaders in the EU” for his support for Russia. However, Zeman’s supporters, who have since opposed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, disagree with this stance.
