Richard Ashcroft (Richard Paul Ashcroft) an English singer and songwriter known for having been the lead singer and part-time rhythm guitarist of the alternative rock band The Verve from their formation in 1990 until their original split in 1999.

Ashcroft was the founder of The Verve with McCabe, Jones, and Salisbury in 1990. They became widely known for their taste in psychedelic music and drugs. After five years of being together, they split in 1995, and around the same time, Ashcroft had a collection of songs he planned to release in his solo album.

Two years later, he changed his mind and asked McCabe to return, and reform The Verve with a new member, Tong. They then released the songs in their album Urban Hymns. The band broke up again in mid-1998 and an official announcement was made the following year.

Ashcroft made peace with McCabe and Jones, and The Verve revived again in 2007 and they played gigs later that year and continued touring in 2008, headlining at several festivals around the world. A new album, Forth, was released in August.

In 2008, the band broke up again for the third time, and it was not publicly announced until the following year in 2009. Ashcroft released his first solo song in 2000, “A Song for the Lovers”, which took number 3 in the UK charts in April 2000.
