Deputy Prime Minister was the candidate of the National Congress Party in the 2006 presidential elections.
He served as Speaker of the Finnish Parliament from 2007 to 2011 and as Chairman of the European People’s Party (EPP) since 2002. Sauli was the NCP candidate in the 2012 presidential election and defeated Pekka Haavisto of the Green Alliance (VIHR) in the second round with 62.6% of the votes.
