Sophie was born to Stephen Uno and Esther Njeri who were both civil servants. In an interview she said; “I grew up in Nairobi. My parents who are now retired were both civil servants. Kenya is home and I try to visit every three to four months since my parents and siblings are all there. I also miss the food and the people and I think Kenya has some of the most intelligent people.”

In 2017, her father who hails from Matathia area passed on. She took to Facebook to inform her followers of the sad news. However, she did not reveal the circumstances leading to his death.

She was raised up along with her siblings; James Mungai,Averina Njeri, Charles Kemu Ikenye and George Ngugi.

Ikenye serves as a presenter and producer of BBC World News’ Focus On Africa. Back in 2009, she began her BBC career at the World Service as the presenter of the radio version of Focus on Africa for three years. Back in 2012, the program was shown onscreen and she still served one of the main presenters of the show.

She is known to have covered key events in Africa including; the 2011 Nigerian presidential elections, the Libya crisis and the 2013 Kenyan elections. She as well interviewed over 10 African presidents and other prominent personalities.

She previously worked in the broadcasting industry in Kenya for 12 years. She served at at KBC, Citizen TV and NTV Kenya and sa well had her internship at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

Back in 2017, Ikenye together with Peter Okwoche, Paul Bakibinga, Salim Kikeke and Dayo Yusufu visited Uganda where they broadcast Focus on Africa for a week. She as well served as guest celebrity anchored the PM Live news on Urban TV.

Back in 2016, she was listed on the 100 Most Influential Young Africans by Africa Youth Awards and as well listed on the 100 Most Influential Young Kenyans.
