Taneti Maamau is a Kiribati politician who has served as the fifth president of Kiribati since 11 March 2016. Tobwaan is a member of the Kiribati Party and began his public service career as a planning officer at the Ministry of Finance before becoming permanent secretary. Taneti ran in the 2016 presidential election and was supported by the New Alliance of Tobwaan Kiribati Party. He had the support of leaders Teburoro Tito and Anote Tong.
